How to have better FPS If this thread is Tl;Dr for you.
For those of you who don't have ADD, here's WHY this will work.

Code: Select all
1. Objects - Low (Normal with good GPU)
2. Terrain - Very Low
3. Clouds - Very Low / Disabled
4. Shadows -Very Low (High or Very High with good GPU)
Textures:
5. Video Memory - Auto
6. Texture Detail - Normal
7. Texture Filtering - High
Rendering:
8. Anti Aliasing - Very Low / Disabled
9. Alpha to Coverage - Disabled
11. Edge Smoothing - FXAA Low
12. HDR Quality - Low
13. Ambient Occlusion - Disabled
14. Post-process Quality - Disabled
15.Go to your documents folder, in there you find the DayZ folder (you can also go via start -> run and then type "%userprofile%\Documents\DayZ\" without quotes in windows 7 or vista). In that folder are DayZ.cfg and (yourname)DayZprofile.cfg, edit those files and change the 2 corresponding lines to this:
GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1;
GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=1;
10. If you have nvidia use: http://www.geforce.com/geforce-experience
11. Set everthing else to high or whatever you want.
For those of you who don't have ADD, here's WHY this will work.
Video Settings
- Overall Quality
This is just a collection of presets for the settings in the lower half. - Rendering Resolution
This one depends on your monitor resolution. If you are trying to gain FPS but you are playing on a large monitor (EG 1920 x 1080) you may want to try set this anywhere from 100% to 83%. Going lower than this severely affects the quality of the display in the game, as a last resort after trying all the other options, you could try setting this as low as 50%. The lower you go, the worse your game will look but should get more FPS. - Brightness
Brightness is what affects how bright things are that emit light. At night I turn this up a good deal to show a contrast between thaedark ( I lower my gamma drastically) and Having things brighter compared to the dark help to find Heli Cashes at night, as well as see any lights, flares ect.
No impact on FPS - Gamma
This affects overall lightning and contrast. Increasing this during nighttime will greatly enhance your vision but will cause your colors to almost go away completely.
No impact on FPS - Rendering Resolution
This is your actual screen resolution. This should match your desktop resolution. - Vsync
This causes your FPS to match your refresh rate on your monitor. Disabling this will probably increase your FPS if it is constantly at 60. (Most screens have a refresh rate of 60hz)
TURN THIS OFF
Quality Settings - Objects Detail
Objects – Object Quality is intensive in DayZ. Setting this ‘Very Low‘ can gain you a few frames but again, it makes models look terrible
Normal - Terrain Detail
Massive FPS gains. Set this to ‘Very Low‘ to remove almost all of the foliage on the ground and gain you some frames.
Disabled / Very Low / Low - Clouds
Clouds in DayZ are extremely detailed and move with the weather. Set this to ‘disabled’ to gain FPS.Disabled
With clouds on:
With clouds off:
- Shadows
This controls if shadows will be a black blob or an actual shadow of a person/object. This takes quite alot of power from your gfx. A normal or low setting will help you alot if you have FPS issues.
DISABLE THIS TO GREATLY INCREASE YOUR FPS
*Another aspect is to go into you DayzProfile under documents and change this variable shadowZDistance=100; – This is the distance at which shadows are drawn. that way you can shadows just near you. Warnining, please read at the bottom the warning before doing advanced changes.
No shadows at all can feel a little unrealistic so I would say keep to Very Low first then go disabled if low FPS persists.
Example:
Shadows very low:
[None]
Shadows Very High:
[None]
Texture Settings - Video Memory
Set to 'Auto' - Texture Detail
This effects how everything looks.
This can often be set quite high without too much of a performance hit.
Example:
Texture Detail very low:
[None]
Texture Detail Very High:
[None] - Texture Filtering
This texture setting only affects display at certain angles. Did not notice much difference in performance. Turn off; or leave on to see if it makes a difference.
Disabled
Example:
Texture Filtering very low:
[None]
Texture Filtering Very High:
[None]
Rendering Settings
- Antialiasing
Turn This off For best FPS. Recommended, Very low.
Anti aliasing – This graphical feature basically makes jagged lines smoother. - Alpha to Coverage
Affects anti-aliasing on trees and grass. This setting doesn't do major changes but affects photo-realism of trees and the like. If you use anti-aliasing you will have the best results if you set this to "All trees + grass", otherwise leave it at disabled for best FPS gains. - Edge Smoothing
This is post processing anti aliasing. Different variations of what it does to the textures edges. There are a few different options here. ‘Disabled‘ gives the best FPS boost. Recommended is ‘FXAA Normal‘. MXAA gives better results but is more intensive. FXAA is very similar to MXAA quality but is less intensive. - HDR Quality
This is affecting lightning quality and bloom effects. Setting this to high will give you better lightning effects but can cause a FPS drop. HDR on high can greatly enhance your visibility during nighttime. - Ambient Occlusion
Disabled.
- Post-process Quality
This is the setting causing the world to "blur" when you run and move. I recommend setting this to Disabled.
- Bloom
Set the slider to 0 - Rotation Blur
Set the slider to 0
Technical Settings - Balancing between CPU and GPU
Any setting lower than high will use your CPU instead of GPU (graphics-card) and this can be very useful if you don't have a powerful GPU. Sometimes, setting values to high can actually improve fps since a GPU is a lot faster on some types of calculations compared to a CPU. - SSD -Solid State Drive
Tremendous performance boost, not in terms of FPS but in loading times of both the game and its assets. Dean “Rocket” Hall has specifically spoke about this on Reddit that the biggest performance boost you can achieve in DayZ would be through installing DayZ on a SSD.
How to Move DayZ On to my Solid State Drive (SSD)Code: Select allOpen Steam, navigate to ‘steam’ -> ‘settings’. Click the ‘Downloads’ tab in the middle-left. Under ‘Content Libraries’ click ‘Steam Library Folders’. Use the drop-down menu to select your SSD. On my own system my SSD is ‘C:/’ while steam is installed on my ‘D:/’ Drive. Under your SSD Drive, make a new folder and name it ‘Steam’ or something similar. Now that Steam has a drive on both your normal HDD and your speedy SSD,when you download / install DayZ through Steam you’ll be given the option to install it to your SSD. Don’t want to uninstall DayZ? Use a program called SteamMover which will move games to your SSD and back again very easily.
- Command Parameters
Steam’s launch options allow you to supersede the internal settings of whichever game they are applied too. To access launch options, you need to right-click on DayZ (or any game) within steam and select ‘settings‘. Now select ‘launch options‘ and you will be presented with a single line text-box. There are a few different launch options that are useful here.
Code: Select all-nosplash – removes the Bohemia Interactive splash page, letting you get into the game faster. -skipintro - skips the intro, getting you into the game faster. -noPause – keeps the game running while minimized or not focused. -world=*empty – disables the map from loading on launch, meaning you get into the game launcher quicker, but loading the game will take longer. -cpuCount=8 – set this to how many cores your CPU has. Most systems are either 2 (dual-core), 4 (quad-core), or 8 (octa-core). -maxMem =8192 – set this to the total amount of RAM your system has, 2048 for 2GB, 4096 for 4GB, 8192 for 8GB. -window - launches the game in windowed mode, if that’s something you’re looking for. -noborder - launches the game in border-less windowed mode. Remember, cpuCount – 2 (dual-core), 4 (quad-core), or 8 (octa-core). maxMem - 2048 for 2GB, 4096 for 4GB, 8192 for 8GB. So your launch options within the box should look something like this: -cpuCount=4 -maxMem=8192 -skipintro -nosplash -nosplash -noPause
- Advanced Settings
I just found this out and it can GREATLY increase your FPS.Code: Select allGo to your documents folder, in there you find an Arma 2 folder (you can also go via start -> run and then type "%userprofile%\Documents\Dayz\" without quotes in windows 7 or vista). In that folder are DayZ.cfg and (yourname).DayZProfile, edit those files and change the 2 corresponding lines to this: GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1; GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=1;
USE THESE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I SUGGEST MAKING A BACKUP IN CASE SOMETHING GOES HORRIBLY WRONG.
These are more advanced ways of gaining FPS but all of these have not been extensively tested. For this reason PLEASE MAKE A BACK UP SAVE of each of the original files before editing.
C:UsersyournameDocumentsDayZyour_dayz_profileyour_dayz_profile.DayZProfile
Set the following options :
mouseSmoothing=0; – Optimal. This should help sort out mouse acceleration problems
sceneComplexity=150000; – This number affects your object details.
shadowZDistance=100; – This is the distance at which shadows are drawn.
viewDistance=1600; – This number affects the distance view (trees, grass etc…).
preferredObjectViewDistance=1000; – This will affect the distance that the objects will be drawn.
The Notepadfile named DayZ
Under refresh=60; just alter it to 144 or 120 depending on what monitor you use.
